Volunteer Crew for Trip Boat Jubilee

click here for PDF Crew Leaflet

Flexible roles with great training in a range of crew jobs helping to run our public trip boat on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Newbury.  All the crew are volunteers and we provide full training to enable them to run Jubilee safely. We are one of Newbury’s most popular attractions and offer trips afloat for more than 4000 passengers each year, both Newbury residents and visitors. We particularly like our trips aimed at children such as themed Pirate, Halloween and Santa trips

Why Volunteer?

You will be an ideal crew member if you:

  • like people
  • are reasonably fit
  • like working as a team
  • enjoy the outside life
  • like learning new skills
  • can take direction
  • You don’t need any previous experience as all training will be given but an interest in boating and the canal is an obvious advantage. YOU decide when you volunteer as you self-select the trips you wish to crew on. You can do as little as one day a month or much more. You will learn new skills and every trip is different so you won’t have time to get bored! You don’t have to stick to one crew role. You can perform a variety of roles once you are trained.

    Who’s in the crew?

Each trip usually has 5 crew members:

The Skipper who is a professionally qualified Boatmaster and is in charge of the crew and boat. All our Skippers are volunteers and go through our own intensive training course

The Helm who steers the boat and is second in command. We train our Helms carefully to ensure they can handle the boat safely and provide our passengers with a peaceful and smooth ride.

Two Boat Crew members whose job is to assist the Helm in handling the boat and to operate the locks and movable bridges that we go through on our trips.

Our Passenger Care crew member works inside the boat to look after our passengers and keep them safe. Their role ranges from serving at the bar through selling tickets to keeping an eye on the safety of our younger visitors

    What next?

Let us know you are interested by calling or emailing our Crew Manager. We will invite you to come on a trip to see what we do. If you would then like to join the crew, you’ll start with our Essential Safety Training Course that all crew undertake every year. After that you choose the dates when you want to crew using our on-line rostering system. After a few trips as a ‘trainee’, you will be able to join the crew fully and progress through our training as far as you would like to go.
